Why you need
a babywearing consultant?

At first, they were made from the skins of killed animals, and then from cloth. The life force and wisdom of this tradition is miraculous – it has come to our times, despite the fact that it originates at the dawn of the mankind.
Baby carriers have been around for thousands of years. Carrying a baby in a sling or baby carrier used to be a norm. Little girls would carry their dolls from a young age. Next, they would learn to carry their younger siblings. Once they become mums, they would be fully equipped with this essential skill.Babywearing in civilized countries was almost forgotten, and if slings were used somewhere, then, apparently, in some rural areas, as well as in the 3rd world countries and various tribes and nationalities, leading a style of life close to nature.

Now what we witness is a “rebirth of the slings”. Modern societies are slowly but inevitably starting to realise that carrying a child makes mothers life a lot easier and leaves the baby content and thriving. There has been a lot of research showing that wearing your child in a wrap, sling or carrier will result in beneficial, permanent brain changes, enhancing baby’s IQ, in addition to the long-term benefits of baby wearing, including good health, psychological security and independence.e incredibly self-aware (the MOST IMPORTANT benefit by a long-shot).

Babywearing as an essential skill

The time after pregnancy can be difficult for new mothers. For many it is usually a huge change in their life style, affecting their environment, lifestyle, social habits etc. Babywearing is actually making this change much smoother. The newborn baby who is in close physical contact with his mum feels warm and secure, almost like within a womb. It is a proven fact that babies who are worn cry significantly less, so mum does not have to go through the stress of dealing with the crying baby. On the top of everything, mum can continue with her daily habits and routines which also helps to make the transition from pregnancy to motherhood a lot gentler and smoother.
Nowadays this essential skill has been forgotten and new mums need to get acquainted and master it from scratch. Like with most skills, acquiring it takes time, patience, practice and some guidance.
This guidance can be obtained from the on-line videos, peer to peer support at sling meets or from a qualified baby carrying consultant. Some of the videos available could be confusing or show unsafe practices, some of the slings could be not appropriate for the particular situation or could not hold your baby in the ‘optimal’. A one to one consultation will make sure you choose what is best for you and your baby. It will help you start babywearing adventure in the best possible way – with safety, confidence and enjoyment.

WHY BABYWEARING CONSULTANT?

We understand your and your baby’s body

Pregnancy and the hormones of the postnatal period affects your muscles, ligaments and posture, not to mention your digestive system and breasts. The way you gave birth also has an impact on how and how soon you can carry your baby. We will take your postnatal recovery into account when suggesting a suitable sling or carrier, and will work with you while you take your pace in adapting to your new life with the baby.

We also understand how babies develop – physiologically and mentally and how to make sure that babywearing supports and not counteracts this development. This is especially important for newborns as they are still developing and adjusting to the life outside the womb.

Safety First

We will introduce you to the established babywearing safety rules and will explain the reasons and the theory behind them. You will practice those rules together until they become second nature to you. You will learn to apply them taking into consideration your babies age and the carrier you own.

We know all the tricks

Can’t get your buckle carrier straps off your neck? The rings of your sling end up too low? You feel hot and messy while carrying your baby? Your baby cries each time she is put in the sling? You simply need to hear that you do it right? We will be able to deal with almost any issue and will share with you tips and tricks of the trade that will make things a whole lot easier. That way you can save yourself from hours of YouTube watching, and trial and error stress. You will learn the reasons and the ways to deal with it much faster too because consultants not only know the tricks, they know how to teach them!

We have most slings

Baby ring slings display Chances are, we will have main types of carriers and slings available for you to try (usually purchased at their own expense) and if we don’t, we will help you choose one or help you understand the pros and cos of your chosen sling before you buy it. Not only that – you will be able to hire the preferred sling from our sling library.

We understand when things get complicated

Your baby may have been born prematurely, or with a low birthweight. Your baby or child may need assistance with breathing or feeding, or suffer from a disability. You might have a disability yourself and need help to choose the best sling for you. If you had a caesarean or complicated delivery, you might need more specialized advice on wearing your baby in the early postnatal period. And if you’ve had twins, you might want to find out how to carry them both at the same time. When things get a little bit more complicated, a babywearing consultant is able to take the fear out of learning to use a baby carrier and enable you to wear your baby whatever situation you find yourself in.

You will get ongoing support

After your consultation, your babywearing consultant will always contact you on a regular basis. You will be provided with a follow-up message containing all of the information that was discussed during the consultation and some additional information you may need.

You will be able to contact your consultant whenever you need a quick opinion or an extra tip. Your consultant will be next to you when your baby goes through all the critical stages of her growth and when you need a little bit of help in adapting to her new babywearing needs. Consultant will help when you face changes in your personal situation, e.g. start working outside your home or move to a new country. You will never feel left alone.

WHO ARE BABYWEARING CONSULTANTS?

Babywearing Consultants are usually mums or dads who carried their own children. They will have many hours of experience in teaching with a good few years of babywearing experience under their belt.

They are trained

A baby carrying consultant is someone who has undertaken formal training with one of the accredited babywearing schools across the world in how to use and teach different baby carriers that are safe and comfortable, for both baby and parent. While each course is different, they all strive to achieve a high standard of education for their consultants, meaning you can be assured that your consultant will know their stuff.

They are professional

Babywearing consultants are trained to assess your situation and will work with you to find what works for both you and your child. They understand that one size does not necessarily ‘fit all and can help you find the best carrier to suit your family and your individual needs.

They know how difficult it can be to get out of the house to meet a huge group of mums you’ve never met to ask them for advice and help. They can help in certain cases where parents need or prefer more intimate or personal guidance.

They are not selling

Babywearing consultants are sharing education and you are seen as a client, not as a customer. They do not sell or promote any particular style or brand of carrier. They want to give you an unbiased opinion and a good start to your babywearing journey, thy will try to meet your needs without selling you something. On the top of that, they can assist you in finding the right retail store to purchase the skin-to-skin device or carrier of your choice.

No need to purchase a carrier

Babywearing consultant maintains a small teaching stash of carriers and devices that you can try at consultations. You can receive expert guidance to assure a proper fit. Furthermore, you can rent a carrier from your babywearing consultant in order to get a good feel for it before you make your final decision

All caregivers can learn at once

Parents, grandparents, partners, siblings, and nannies can all be part of the consultation. Everyone can practice, and determine what is the best carrier for their body and baby.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Regular one-to-one or skype consultation

During a babywearing consultation your babywearing consultant will talk about the different types of carriers that are generally available. You will then be offered a choice of carriers applicable to your individual situation. You will also learn about anatomy and development of your baby and how it affects the choice of the baby carrier. You will learn how to wear your baby in an ergonomically optimal position and the various carrying options you have.

Your babywearing consultant will help you narrow down your choice of carriers and will let you try wearing your baby so that you choose the carrier that is most comfortable for you and your baby and suits your needs best.

In brief

While learning to wear your baby in your chosen sling your babywearing consultant will let you practice step by step techniques with a special babywearing demo doll until you are confident to try it with your baby. You will also learn what accessories are useful to wear your baby with ease considering the weather conditions.
